Dual fuel buses introduced

C40 City Mayor Summit unveiled dual fuel buses recently.

The first of 125 dual fuel powered buses which form part of Johannesburg’s new fleet of Metro Buses were introduced on the first day of the C40 City Mayor Summit recently.

Two buses were used in transporting attendees from all over the world on tours around Johannesburg.

Transport MMC Christine Walters said: “The choice to introduce dual fuel buses in the new fleet was aimed at contributing to the footprint of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

Walters said the buses, which use compressed natural gas in conjunction with diesel to power their engines, would contribute to the reduction of fuel emissions and cost-saving in managing the fleet.

She said this engineering model uses 70 percent compressed natural gas and 30 percent diesel, which results in an overall 70 percent cost-saving and 70 percent less fuel emissions.
