Community Safety establishes drug committees

The Department of Community Safety is focusing on prevention rather than being reactive to the South African drug problem.

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety has established local drug committees which will run awareness campaigns about drugs.

The MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko said that the usage of substance abuse in the communities is appalling.

“We are all affected by this monster directly or indirectly. You either know someone who has been affected within your circles or you are the victim of this terrible activity. Families have been dismantled, jobs and lives have been lost, and careers have been shoved down the drain all in the name succumbing to the next fix,” she said.

Mazibuko said that the youth continue to perish at the hands drugs and alcohol.

“Government has invested millions in an effort to fight against drugs, but it cannot do it alone. Parents, churches, civil society, teachers and communities need to stand together and end the usage of drugs,” she said.

Mazibuko said that awareness programs will focus on prevention rather than being reactive to the problem.

“Some of these programs include the establishment of local drug committees which will run awareness campaigns to educate those that are still clean on the dangers of using nyaope to name a few. The program also acts as referrals where there is already a case of drug abuse,” she said.
