Safer Internet Day celebrated

The world wide web can be a safer place, pupils learn how.

Pupils from different high schools attended the ‘Safer Internet Day event at Julies High School last Tuesday.

Emshukantambo Senior Secondary School pupils, represented Pimville where they went and learnt how to use the World Wide Web not only effectively, but also safer to.

Sponsored by the Film and Publication board and Google South Africa, no stone was left unturned as everything concerning the internet was taught to the pupils.

“The experience was wonderful and it helped as now our pupils are more informed,” said Pule Hlahane, a teacher and Emshukantambo Senior Secondary School.

He said he was pleasantly surprised to see that pupils knew more about the internet that their parents did.

Meshack Mavuso an actor who was the facilitator said: “When you give a young person a cellphone or a computer, you realise that there is more to these gadgets that what you as an adult was using them for.”

“The day was a success as different group discussions were held and the pupils and especially teachers left with an even better understanding of the internet,” said Hlahane.

He said the day was celebrated globally with over 90 countries participating.

Hlahane said words couldn’t express how inspired he was as he left the event with a better understanding.
