Man beaten up for allegedly stealing cellphone

Some Zone Six residents took the law into their own hands when a 17-year-old was allegedly robbed of her cellphone.

An angry mob beat a man for stealing a cellphone atin Zone 6 on Monday.

The suspect allegedly stole the cell phone from a 17-year-old pupil. The mother of the victim Lindi Kopang said that the suspect asked for the time.

“When my daughter took out her cellphone, the suspect took out a knife and threatened my daughter. My neighbour saw what was happening and called out “Vimba!” and the suspect was caught,” she said.

The suspect was beaten so badly that the police had to call an ambulance.

Kopang said that she does not trust anyone anymore.

“I am still scared about what could have happened to my daughter. I urge parents to guard their children, especially the young ones. I don’t want what happened to my daughter to happen to someone else,” she said.

The spokesperson for the Diepkloof police station Phephi Mteto-Matlou said that they do not encourage mob justice.

“We understand that people are angry but the law doesn’t allow the community to take the law into their own hands. We encourage people who are in the same situation to catch the suspect and call the police. People can be arrested for taking the law into their own hands,” she said.

The people who beat the suspect were not identified. Kopang and her daughter have opened a case at the Diepkloof Police Station.
