The youth are taking charge

Youth surprises officials on last day of voter registration.

The last day of voter registration had an unexpected turnout at most registration sites with an increase in the presence of youth.

Unlike last years’ registrations, this year proved to many that the young actually intend to do something about their political voice and are taking charge.

“For a while the youth has been giving the impression that they are not interested in politics but the past weekend proved that interest is gradually building.

“Saturday had a steady flow with most people coming to check their voter status.

“Sunday showed an increase in the number of youth coming for new registrations while the older age group mostly coming to check their voter status,” said councillor Sphiwe Zulu.

Thembisiwe and Nonkululeko Nyathikazi came to register for the first time and said that they don’t see the point of sitting back if they can take a simple step towards change.

“There are many things I would like to see change, one of which is rate of youth unemployment and support for youth empowerment initiatives.

“We not saying that the government should give us jobs but they should at least meet us halfway by deploying agencies in our immediate community which can make it easier to create or find employment,” said Thembisiwe Nyathikazi.

The councillor said that now we will wait for May 7 and hope that the turnout for voting will have even more people participating.
