Deteriorating state of new park

Zone Two Park’s condition deteriorates months after being renovated.

A few months ago the Zone Two Park was the pride of the community but now that has changed.

The park was renovated for six months in 2013 and opened to the public in September.

The community was excited for the park perceived as a symbol of development and development.

It did not take for the excitement to disappear, today the park’s condition has deteriorated.

In 2013 it was reported that a budget of 3 million had been allocated for the renovations.

Swings and gym equipment are broken, women toilets are not being used because of a water leak since the park’s renovations and the park is not being properly maintained with broken beer bottles all over the park and there is graffiti on walls.

Last week, gym equipment was found on the ground, detached from its pole but because it is too heavy to carry, it was left there.

After its renovations the concern in the community was that nyaope addicts would vandalise and steal anything that is steel at the park.

Ward councillor, Takalani Nefotoni urged the community to own the park and ensure that the park is taken care of.

“The community needs to stand up against any vandalism to their park.

“They need to be the ears and eyes by protecting what’s theirs and reporting any wrong doing.

“It took years for renovations at the park to happen and now it is a community’s responsibility to look after it,” he said.

Nefotoni said one of things that has contributed to the deteriorated state is that the Zone Two park the only one that looks like it does in the whole of Meadowlands.

He said: “It is always crowded and it is used by people all over the area.”
