A family in Orlando East was awoken after a car crashed into their home last Friday at 1 am at Molokomme Street popularly known as Africa Road. The crash left a big hole in the wall of their sitting room.

Dipuo Monye who shares the home with her daughter, grandmother and aunt said that she thanks God that her and her family is alive after such a horrific incident.

We were sleeping and all of a sudden I just heard a big bang we all run to see what was happening and to our shock they was a red VW in our sitting room. Monye said that they were three young men in their twenties and three teenage girls in the car.

“The driver of the car ran off, the remaining five occupants seemed intoxicated. She said that this is not the first time an incident like this has happened at her home.

“Every weekend these young boys drag race from Nasrec and the pass by this road on their way to Nasrec and also on their way home. Every time we hear a car speeding by we hold our breath hoping it does not came crashing into our house,” she said.

The family has made complains about this issue. Monye said that Johannesburg Road Agency attempted to help by barricading the outside of their home to prevent cars from crushing into their home.

“That did not last as the barricade was crushed into by a speeding car, she said.

The family has also put big rocks in front of their home to try and prevent the crushes.

“We can’t live like this we are constantly afraid, my grandmother is old now and she can’t take the stress anymore,” she said.

The ward councillor Queen Riba said that she will make sure that JRA to puts up another barricade.

“I urge parents to take a responsible role in their children’s lives, why are such young children drag racing in the early hours of the morning. Why are parents letting their children drive their cars so late at night,” she said. She said parents need to know where their children are at all times.
