Understanding sector police

SAPS has introduce sector policing across the country, in aid to decrease the crime rate in smaller communities.

The South Africa Police Services has implemented sector policing to help fight crime in smaller sectors.

Sector Policing means policing that focuses on small manageable sectors of a police station’s area.

Sector policing is a tool to implement community policing.

The purpose of sector policing is to perform targeted visible police patrols and to ensure a rapid response to complaints.

The role of the sector policing is to mobilize and organize the community in the sector to take action against local crime together with the police.

The Community Police Forum is to act as liaison between the community of the sector and the local police station.

The role the community needs to play is to attend the community police forum meetings to discuss action plans with the sector commander in order to deal with crime in the sector.

Residents are urged to participate in neighbourhood initiatives to safeguard the area in which they live, work and play.

The structures for the community involvement in policing:

· Community patrol groups

· Street watches

· Street communities

· Neighbourhood watches

· Business watches
