Food gardens help the poor

Food gardening is promoted to alleviate poverty and unemployment.

Residents were reminded of how they can fight poverty and unemployment through food gardening.

Baithaopi ba Gauteng, an organisation aimed at empowering the community to better their lives and solve their daily problems, believes food gardening can make a huge difference.

Last Thursday Baithaopi invited the department of agriculture to share insights on how to go about starting their own food gardens.

The chairperson of the community organisation, Kago Motswagae, said there are many open spaces in the community and in yards that could be used to alleviate poverty and unemployment.

He said: “We encourage residents to do things for themselves and not wait on government or freebies to better their lives.

“Very often people talk about how poor they are but they do not do anything about it.

“The community needs to start acquiring information that will, in the end, empower them.”

He said the department of agriculture was willing to help those that have an interest.
