Residents in Zone Seven beat up a man accused of stealing a cell phone at house in the area.
The 27-year-old was rescued by the police from further assault and then he was arrested.
Constable Sibusiso Chauke said: “It is alleged the accused went into the house and stole the cell phone.
“The complainant screamed for help and the community heard her.
“They found the accused and started to assault him.”
He appeared in the Meadowlands Court last Thursday and is out on bail.
He will be back in court on February 11.
Chauke said the police condemn mob justice. He said residents should not take the law into their own hands.
