One dead as 14 shacks burn to the ground

A shack fire left one person dead and others homeless.

At least 14 shacks were burnt down in Bramfischer, Block 12.

This incident claimed the life of a 27-year-old male who lived in one of the shacks.

Lerato Spere burnt to death in the fire that happened around 2am, last week.

His grieving mother, Helen Spere, said sadly that her son was trapped inside and could not find the keys to unlock the door.

“I held his hand as I tried to pull him out but the flames kept on coming.

She said” Neighbours and friends did all they can but were not luck.

All affected families lost their belongings including identity documents.

According to ANC chairperson in Ward 44, Simon Mbedzi the cause of the fire is still unknown but said they suspect a candle or a paraffin stove.

“The councillor was informed of the matter and we are waiting for the people to be moved to a temporal shelter,” said Mbedzi.

He offered condolences to the Spere family.
