First day woes for school beginners

Not even school can separate a child from a mother's love.

Excitement and joy turned into tears of sulking as Nkululeko Sibeko was crying for his mother not to leave on his first day of school.

His mother says: “Nkululeko wanted to spend the whole day of school with me even though he would still see me after school.

“I don’t know what his intentions are because he has been to crèche before, and me leaving him is nothing new.”

According to his mother, it started out as crying for free gifts that were being handed out at school, but even after getting his free cap Nkululeko still kept crying.

Zama says that Nkululeko has been really excited about going to school and that he had been nagging her about clothes and stationery.

“Since the beginning of the year he has been on my case about school and all these things we have to buy, but come the day, he decides he doesn’t want to be alone now,” Zama said.

As a single parent, Zama says that it is a challenge raising a child but challenges such as guiding her son through his first day at school gives her complete joy.

Zama said that the expectation remains for Nkululeko to do well at his school work and behave in a dignified manner as he has been taught to.
