'Violence at schools must stop'

Law enforcement should consider finding other safety measures to fight gangsterism.

The ward committee member for public safety in Ward 44, Joel Mabaso, says gangsterism has become a serious problem due to items discovered during school searches.

In one of the searches, Mabaso said they discovered knives, dagga and liquor.

“I appreciate the school searches police and the CPF perform.

Mabaso said law enforcement should consider finding other safety measures to fight gangsterism.

He said: “Safety should be a priority on the Department of Education’s yearly agenda.

“It should not only be the teachers’ responsibility to identify the people thought to be involved in gangs but SGB’s as well.

“In my opinion, gang suspects at school should be suspended to leave room for those who go there to learn.

Mabaso said he is pleading with councillors, police, teachers and SGB’s to unite to end violence at schools.
