Animals on the loose over the New Year’s ‘celebration

3000 runaway animals admitted to the 98 SPCA’s around the country.

The last year’s New Year’s celebrations, specifically fireworks display, caused quite a stir for animal welfare organisations across the Highway area.

Public Relations Education Officer Pat Zulu said their kennels supervisor was up all night, checking on the animals in their kennels.

“Our offices received 53 stray animals into their kennels between December 31 until January 5.

“The number had increased to 67 stray animals the next day, with another 48 animals being admitted.

“The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) released stats which revealed a total of 3000 runaway animals admitted to the 98 SPCA’s around the country.

“Some of these animals were severely injured while others have died as a result of the irresponsible use of fireworks,” she said.

Zulu said the SPCA advises people to act responsibly because animals are continuing to suffer for their carelessness.

“This New Year saw several runaway animals being impaled on palisade fencing, suffering agonising trauma.

“Others have jumped through windows and sustained injuries, while yet more have become disorientated in the mayhem and run from their homes.

The SPCA has called on the government to ban fireworks since no one adheres to the specified time given for residents to burst fireworks, which is 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after midnight.
