Aids fighting activities on the cards in Gauteng

MMC urges people to Get Wise, Get Tested, Get Circumcised.

Nonceba Molwele, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Development in the City of Johannesburg said HIV/Aids clinical care has improved dramatically over the decades, given the availability of new medications and a better understanding of how to deliver primary care to persons living with HIV/Aids.

Molwele was speaking during the launch of the 16 Days of activism against women and children and World Aids day last Thursday at Constitutional Hill.

As part of the City of Johannesburg build-up activities towards the commemoration of World Aids Day, the Johannesburg Aids Council chaired by executive mayor, Parks Tau acknowledge the great work done by different care centres in Soweto for care, love and shelter they give to people affected and infected by HIV and Aids.

“The city of Joburg wishes to thank all caregivers for the sacrifices they make in caring for sick people at homes, we also acknowledge that caregivers provide care that helps ill people and families to maintain their independence and achieve the best possible quality of life.

“The care provided by these organisations reduces the burden on primary health care services rendered by the city, and is highly appreciated by the city.”

Molwele said from December 1 the city will commence with activities in line with educating residents about HIV / Aids.

“Some of activities which we will host includes door-to door education, providing information to commuters at Taxi ranks, and youth dialogues on HIVAids.

“The theme for the 2013 World Aids Day is “Get Wise, Get Tested, Get Circumcised and it aims towards the global goal to reduce HIV related deaths by 2015.”

Residents are reminded that the first step to protect one’s health and the health of their loved ones is to make sure that people know their status and get tested regularly.
