Student shares his knowledge on science

Pupils urged to study science.

A student from Netherlands who studies at the Stellenbosch University in the Western Cape, Bart Smit, recently met with children from Dobsonville to teach them about science.

His visit formed part of an outreach programme which he said is compulsory to all students doing the physics course.

He said each student is expected to visit either a primary or a high school to advise pupils on the importance of physics by sharing scientific knowledge.

During the experimental period, Smit taught the children about the use of light, temperature and liquids.

He demonstrated how some laser colour lights are able to glow in the dark.

“We want to make children interested in scientific methods and for them to enroll to such courses at tertiary level,” Smit said. Some countries do not have enough scientists and it becomes difficult for such countries to develop economically – specifically in such fields.

He said it is essential for the youth to be educated about the impact that science has on human beings.

“I believe science education should be easily accessible to anyone who wishes to get an insight understanding on the subject,” said Smit.
