Residents speak out about E-tolling

Residents share their views about the inception of E- tolling.

Minister of Transport Dipou Peters announced last Wednesday that the e-toll system will officially go live on 3 December. Orlando Urban News went on the streets to find out the views of motorists:

Lesego Modise (28) from Orlando East: We already have so many expenses now we are been forced to pay to travel on the roads. With the price of petrol always going up now we need to also pay to travel on the roads, this is too much,” he said.

Nomvula Nkaminde (42) from Orlando East: I will not purchase an e tag and I also urge other motorists to do the same. I see this as day light robbery. Cost of living is already high we don’t need another expense added on that,” she said.

Thembeka Mavusa (38) from Orlando West: I will purchase an E- tag I don’t have a choice, I don’t want to purchase it but what can I do,” said Mavusa.

Carmen Luekis (33) from Noordgesig: This is ridiculous, does our government know how much we are already struggling financially as South Africans. We are living from hand to mouth, now we need to pay to travel on our freeways,” she said.

Mlindi Mjoli (32) from Orlando East: The government didn’t go about the whole process the right way, they didn’t consult the public who are suppose to contribute on the whole E- toll system. They stand to raise the whole loan within three years. We have petrol price going up, now E- tolling it’s too much,” he said.
