1000 children to receive toys

Organisations are appealing for donations of toys to be given to underprivileged children. A parade will go through streets of Eldorado Park where Father Christmas will hand out toys.

Organisations have come together for a Christmas drive to be held on December 1.

Their goal is to collect toys that will be given to 1000 underprivileged children.

“We are asking organisations and people living in the community to donate a small toy, a teddy bear or doll that can brighten a child’s life.

“A simple act of love and compassion like giving a child a toy can bring joy and hope to a little one where hope seems lost,” Wayne Fearick said.

A procession will depart from Shoprite in Extension Five, proceed down Main Road, Boundary Road and end at the Extension Nine stadium where a huge Christmas tree will be lit up.

Hoping to have Christmas lights along Main Road, an open-top double-decker bus, Father Christmas and elves and a Christmas tree, organisations are appealing for sponsorship for the items.

“Although the main aim of the event is the gathering of toys for the underprivileged in our community, it is also aimed at creating a culture of community participation,” said Fearick.

Organisations are encouraged to join in the events by renting a trailer and decorate it.

Drummies, marching bands and bikers will lead the procession with Father Christmas handing out sweets to onlookers.

The day will end with carols by candlelight at the stadium while street lights are switched on.

Participation is free but those attending will be required to bring a toy.

“The community deserves to come together as one to celebrate their achievements in the last year through giving thanks and praise to the Almighty,” Fearick said.
