Public demonstration goes wrong

Resident hospitalised after police open fire.

Police opened fire on a group of protesters between Zola and Zondi recently and one resident was admitted to hospital.

During the protest residents closed Koma road using bricks and tires, and although there was police visibility the protest eventually got out of hand.

According to the police spokesperson Kay Makhubela, the situation lead the police to use rubber bullets to manage the crowd

Residents of Zola and Zondi took to the streets with the intention of addressing and resolving issues concerning traffic signs and the accidents which have been constantly occurring in the area.

The community outcry was for the installation of humps or repairof traffic lights which had been out of order for more than a week or replacement of old stop signs with new and visible stop signs along Koma Road between Ikhwezi and Masingati street

Other than traffic signs, the community have concerns the about pedestrian crossing near a school which is ignored by motorists and has resulted in school pupil being knocked over by cars.

Residents are willing to volunteer as scholar patrols and help people cross the road.

They are concerned that they are not trained or they are not professional but are willing to learn and help others.

Gordon Mthembu, a community leader, asks officials to support them and would like to work with them to help resolve the issue in their community.

They ask for training and uniforms such as reflector vests to temporarily resolve the situation until a permanent solution is put in place.

Mthembu said the community is intent on pressing charges against the police officers who shot at residents because the residents were not posing any threat to the community or to the police themselves.

Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said that three arrests have been made and the suspects went to court on October 4.

Makhubela said that those who were shot at may go to the police station to lay charges of assault.
