Pupils educated on diabetes

Diabetics is a serious disease but can be controlled pupils were told.

Parkdale Primary School had an awareness day for pupils on the symptoms and dangers of diabetes.

Acknowledging world diabetes day, the school aimed at educating pupils on healthy eating habits and lifestyles.

The school health nurse educated pupils on signs to look out for. Some of the symptoms are:

– frequent urination

– shaking and dizziness

– constant hunger and thirst

– a tingle sensation in hands and feet

– sores that don’t heal

“Diabetes is a serious illness but you can live life if you look after yourself,” said the nurse Dina Begbie.

Cecilia Zondeki, a teacher from the school said that the sooner one knows their status, the better it can be treated, not to progress to the second stage. People who have family with diabetes should test themselves regularly as it could be generic. Pupils were advised to eat healthy and stay away from sweets.

“If you like cakes, sweets and fizzy drinks and don’t exercise, you are in danger of becoming a diabetic,” said the principal.

“Eat a lot of yellow and orange vegetables, exercise often, eat brown bread and only two sweets a day,” Begbie advised pupils.
