Spaza shop burns to ashes

One of the biggest and best-supported spaza shops in Zone 10 burnt down on November 1.

One of the biggest and best-supported spaza shops in Zone 10 burnt down on November 1.

Groceries worth thousands of rands were destroyed by the wild fire.

The shop owners had closed the shop three hours before being informed it was on fire.

Rose Nkosi, president of the South African Spaza and Tuckshop Association (SASTA), said she believes the shop was set alight.

“There have been several attacks on the shop owners before.

“This is really saddening because this spaza was catering for the needs of the community.

“Black businesses will rise above plans to destroy them.

“We will not stand around and let people ruin what we work hard for.”

Nkosi urges residents to help fight against attacks on black businesses by reporting such incidents to the police.

“I know that this business will rise and do even better.

“Whoever did this will not win,” she said.

Police investigations are ongoing.
