Tumi Malatjie aspires to teach sign language in schools – especially at primary school level.

When she enrolled for sign language classes, she thought of the doors it would open for her but that changed when she realised the challenges experienced by deaf people in the community.

Malatjie’s concern is that deaf people are unable to express themselves because many people do not know sign language, which makes the process of communication a barrier.

“Children are unable to communicate their feelings on issues such as abuse, they are not fully integrated into communities and their peers,” she said.

Malatjie believes, given the chance, she can make a difference by teaching children sign language.

Her wish is to start teaching sign language in schools, principals and teachers of schools that are interested may contact her on 084 666 3223.
