One house one meter for Zola

Joburg Water adamant that there will not be more than one meter per household.

‘No household will have more than one water meter, this is according to the ‘one house one meter policy’ derived by Joburg Water under their Soweto water infrastructural upgrade and rehabilitation project.

This came as a response to residents demanding that there be extra water meters installed in their household.

Some home owners have sub-tenants living in their property and have requested that an extra meter be installed which to serve the sub-tenants only.

In response, Aron Mokgotsi representing Joburg Water, said that would be unfair on other tenants who only have one meter.

“Each household is allocated one meter and the only time a new meter is installed is when an existing meter is damaged and a claim has been processed”, said Mokgotsi.

He added that having two meters means when tenants are not around the main household can easily use water that is meant for sub-tenants.

Mokgotsi appeals to Zola residents to work with Joburg Water to use water effectively.

When the subsidised water supply does not meet demands then tenants are expected to buy water to meet their own demand.

The public can also help Joburg Water in taking responsibility in the following ways:

No leaving taps leaking, fixing leaking taps, fixing leaking geyser pipes, water the garden less often, avoid using leaking buckets when doing washing or avoid leaving water run excessively when rinsing, and sharing water amongst all residents in the household.

Most importantly, Mokgotsi asks the community not to use water irresponsibly and practice wise water usage as the national water supply is running short and every effort towards saving water will contribute towards water preservation.
