A solution for matric pupils

Westbury Secondary School has 70 matric pupils that are housed at the school’s hostel and are writing their final examinations.

The programme has been running for the past two years.

“We realized that pupils didn’t have a place to study without any distractions,” said Harvey Seckel the coordinator of the programme.

The hostels are situated at the youth centre which has helped students study and keep busy during the examinations.

The pupils housed at the hostels follow a strict timetable which includes 12 hours in a day for studying.

Pupils are fed three times a day using money donated to the programme.

“We are looking for funders to sponsor pupils with lunch,” said Seckel.

Elton Edmonds, a teacher at Westbury Secondary School, can see improvements in the matric results for the past two years.

“We have done this project for the past two years and seen our pass rate increased,” said Edmonds.

“I have never studied in a group before this and having a schedule set for me has made these exams run smoothly,” said Carmen Ryan.

Teachers from Westbury Secondary have gone the extra mile for their pupils by being at their study sessions for any questions pupils may have.

“We have to help these pupils because they are children from our community,” said Edmonds.
