Skills centre hoping to expand

Their centre offers courses on welding, fire-fighting, first-aid and upholstery.

Soweto Artisan Skills and Business Development, which focus on building a better community through skills development, are trying to raise funds.

The organisation focuses on bringing businesses together and providing skills and development for the unemployed.

Their centre offers courses on welding, fire-fighting, first-aid and upholstery.

The building, situated at the Avalon Depot in Klipspruit was a vandalised and abandoned one until Ally Maseko did minor renovations to it, he claims.

“By bringing businesses together, the centre became an operational one where we now train and place people,” Maseko said.

To maintain their centre, the organisation has monthly raffles where residents stand a chance of winning a grocery hamper. They are also planning a flea market where opportunities to set up stalls will be available.

“Our fund raisers are meant to sustain training people for free and increase the standard of training.

“The grocery hamper raffles are an initiative that help the needy,” said Maseko.

They need sponsorship and are appealing to businesses and residents to help grow the centre with sponsorships.

The centre can be reached on 011 947 3919.
