‘No help, no pay’

Residents have been experiencing issues regarding pipes and sewage water flooding their streets.

This week residents at Sabie Court in Waterval have been experiencing issues regarding pipes and sewage water flooding their streets.

“Joburg Water had an inspection and just told me it’s not their problem but rather it is the Department of Housing,” said Anthony Shalton.

This plumbing issue has been an on-going problem for residents, due to the pipes not being maintained.

“In my 12 years of living at these flats, I have never seen these pipes being maintained or replaced,” said Ivan Geldart.

“The problem was reported a week ago and no-one has really helped,” said Geldart.

“The council has told me that they can’t help because of residents not paying rent.

“Why should we pay rent if we don’t receive proper service from the council?

“The sewage pipe burst and caused a sink hole that is growing by the day,” said Geldart.

“Close to Waterval Flats there is a sewage pipe that is over flowing and a huge volume of water was flooding the road three days ago.

“This is a recent pipe that they came to fix but look how it looks now.

“My worry is that the newly tarred road that was recently laid might get potholes,” said Geldart.

Andries Botha from Joburg Water said, “The sewage pipe has been fixed but the pipes in the houses belong to the Department of Housing.”
