Police show appreciation

More than 10 organisations, churches and retirement villages received blankets on Thursday from the Eldorado Park police station.

This was done by the police to show their appreciation to non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

“It is our (police) social responsibility to give to NGOs, we also want to maintain and sustain relationships with stakeholders in the community,” said Captain Phillemon Khorombi.

He said that the purpose of the event was to protect vulnerable groups and raise awareness around women and children abuse, in line with 16 days of activism.

Since May, organisations teamed up with police to protect the streets of Eldorado Park and Brigadier Leroy Nolan appreciates their effort.

While going through the holding cells, management of the police noticed that 90% of prisoners are locked up for drug related crimes.

Nolan said the fight against drugs is not over – with the help of organisations many drug dealers will be removed from streets.

He made a commitment to the retirement villages to have more police visibility.

NGOs were treated to snacks after receiving the blankets.

“Everything the police did today means a lot to us.

“The fact that they are reaching out to us with tangible items shows that they care about the community,” said Patricia Abrahams from Andries Meyer Retirement Village.

Khorombi said that without their relationship with the community Eldorado Park police would never achieve their objectives.
