Domestic violence in the spotlight

Police, JMPD, CPF, YD and SANCA embark on a domestic violence awareness campaign.

Moroka Police Station has partnered with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) Community Patroler Forum, Youth Desk and SANCA and embarked on a domestic violence awareness campaign in Chiawelo and White City.

The station’s communications officer John Serala said: “We as the police officers saw a gap between the police and the community and that the issue of domestic violence was not discussed and ignored.

“So we took the opportunity and came up with an event where we aim to engage the public on issues relating to domestic violence.

“The response was greater than expected, because we managed to interact with different people and visited different places where there is a high number of domestic violence,” he said.

Serala said: “The campaign started in Chiawelo Sector 1 and proceeded to Sector 5 in White City.

“In all the spots we were able to issue pamphlets and information condemning this social issue and we also gave out tips on how they can get help should they find themselves being victimised or how they can help us fight this challenge because it is really growing and affecting a lot of people,” he said.

Serala said people should break the silence and report domestic violence to the following places: SAPS Crime Stop 08600 10111, Women abuse helpline 0800 150 150, Child line 0800 055 555.
