Residents are urged to be careful when walking near bushes and refrain from using deserted areas

Residents are urged to be careful when walking near bushes whether during the day or at night.

This came after two women were allegedly robbed at the bushes next to Chiawelo Train Station last Thursday morning.

One of the victims, Martha Mathebula (44) said they were coming back from their small vegetables farm when they were attacked.

“Every morning we make sure that we go to our small vegetable garden at the station to irrigate the soil, cut grass and plant new vegetables.

“So today (last Thursday) was not our day, these children produced a gun and demanded our money, cellphones and they even took our garden tools.”

Mathebula said: “I’m so traumatised and can’t believe this has happened to me, we just listened to them and handed our phones and money over to them because we were afraid they might rape or kill us.”

Moroka Police Station communications and media liaison officer John Serala said: “We haven’t received any case related to this, but what I can say is that people must refrain from using deserted and bushy areas, that is dangerous.

“I understand that since the country is facing high number of poverty and unemployment, people make different means for survival, but they must not compromise their safety when doing so.”
