School search and stop and search successes

Last week Friday the Moroka police, patrollers, Department of Community Safety and the dog unit conducted school searches in the seven sectors of the Moroka policing area.

The first phase of the operation was dedicated to the school visits while the second part was for stop and searches in the community.

Communications officer of the Moroka police station, John Serala said: “We identified seven problematic schools in our sectors and attended to them at the same time.

“Some schools had minor problems, in others we found a lot of weapons and dagga which we confiscated.

“This time we did not focus on cell phones as we were just searching for weapons and drugs because we have seen that children are now in control of schools.

“We want this to come to an end and for all pupils and teachers to have a safe learning environment.”

Serala said that this will also fall as part of the ‘festive siyabangena operation’ for the patrollers and the Department of Community Safety.

In phase two of this operation, the sector managers identified hot spots where children get the drugs from and targeted those areas.

Serala said: “Through the assistance of the pupils and with the information they gave to us, we were able to conduct stop and search operations and we were able to have a couple of arrests for dagga and bullets.

“We will continue with trying to create a safer environment for all and to decrease the crime in our areas, especially in schools and in the upcoming festive season.”
