‘Don’t turn our children into monsters’

Residents complained about how the justice system has failed them.

This past week, residents held a community meeting at the Westbury Community Hall.

The meeting was called by community leaders to inform people about the recent murder of a 38-year-old man.

At the meeting residents complained about how the justice system has failed them.

“Not one of these victims is my son but I am a mother in this community and am standing up for the children.

“Fairness is what we want,” said Heita Billings.

“For domestic cases the police are quick to respond but for murder cases they take hours to come and collect the body, in Westbury at this time of the year murders is part of life,” said Gayer Myburgh.

“When your children are murdered, a mother can feel the life leave her body.

“Younger children come and ask ‘Would I go to jail if I shot the guy that murdered my brother?’”

“Don’t turn our children into monsters,” said Charley Cook.

The meeting was attended by community leaders that have pledged to support the residents in this cause.

Residents are urged by the executive committee of the Community Police Forum (CPF) to bring forward unsolved case numbers to the CPF office at the Sophiatown Police Station.

The memorandum has been handed over to Sophiatown police station commander brigadier Susan Pitout,The National Prosecution Authority and the Department of
Community Safety.
