Ntshakala proud of representing country

"I learned a lot during this time and enjoyed network with people from other nations, it was a huge honour to represent the youth and the country.”

Nomvula Ntshakala is one of the 20 delegates that recently represented the country in the One Young World Summit.

Ntshakala, from Jabavu, was selected after submitting an application. Organisers wanted young people between ages of 18 – 30 who are involved in the community and who want to make a difference.

These representatives then took part in the summit which was at the Convention Centre and lasted from October 2 to 6.

According to the One Young World Summit, the conference was started in 2009 by a London-based charity which brings together youth from all over the world and assisting them to make lasting connections and for make positive change.

The summit is an annual event where young delegates supported by the One Young World Counsellors discuss and create solutions for issues facing the world.

After the summit the ambassadors work on their own projects or assist those that already exist.

This year’s event took place in Johannesburg and the opening was at the FNB Stadium.

And the South African team was sponsored by Mayor Parks Tau.

Ntshakala said: “We discussed issues around matters of human trafficking, education and human rights among others.

“And I learned a lot during this time and enjoyed network with people from other nations.

“It was a huge honour to represent the youth and the country.”

She said they were also able to meet people such as Kofi Annan, Winnie Mandela and Professor Muhammed Yunus which was a big thing for her.

From here, the county’s 20 delegates will meet and are planning on working on projects to try developing sustainable projects even though they don’t yet know what thay are.
