ODF comes to the party as an organisation established to fight Gender Based Violence (GBV) and had identified Lofentse as one of the schools in Soweto that needs the donation. ODF was established in 2002 by Andile Gaelesiwe who openly revealed in 2001 her painful past of being sexually abused as a child.

She created the foundation to provide survivors of abuse with a sustainable programme aimed at assisting them in their path to healing. This is part of Impilo’s #EmpowerHer campaign and the founder, Angela Yeung, encouraged girls to know their bra sizes.

A lot of these learners did not know or weren’t sure about their sizes. Everyone left not only with bras but also knowing their sizes as measurements were taken to determine their correct sizes.

Impilo founder, Angela Yeung measuring the girls to determine their correct bra size.

“During the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign, we collected 6000 bras from all over the country and displayed them at the Constitutional Hill for this year’s Human Rights Festival. We have realised that bras can be really expensive and girls coming from disadvantaged communities might not be able to afford them,” said Yeung. “Our aim is to empower them through this, we want them to detain their dignity and be comfortable in their own bodies. Girl empowerment serves as a contribution in fighting GBV.”
