Exchange student calls Soweto home

Annika Proy (16) from Austria says adapting to life in Soweto has been okay, however she's trying to get used to the food.

Annika Proy (16) from Austria will call South Africa home for the next six months.

She is part of an exchange programme called Intercultural South Africa (ISA) where pupils from different countries come to South African townships and live amongst South Africans.

Proy, who is currently in Grade 11 at Emshukantambo Senior Secondary School, says adapting to life in Soweto has been okay, however it is the food that she is trying to get used to.

“The school is going global.

“We are always happy to host pupils from other countries,” said Pule Hlahane, a teacher at the school.

He said pupils have welcomed Proy and they have even given her the name- Mpho.

“To show her that we love her, we took her to the Soweto Theatre to watch a stage play,” he said.

“South Africa is totally different from Austria but as days go by, I am adapting to how things work here,” she said.
