Murder accused Flávio Hlabangwane to undergo mental evaluation

Flávio Hlabangwane made his second appearance at the Protea Magistrate Court on Monday, November 22.

The accused is facing charges of murder and contravention of the inquest act. This is after human body parts were discovered on his fridge at Protea Glen Extension 27 on Saturday, November 13.

The accused was seen shedding tears as he stood before the Magistrate, the attorney’s and media. During his appearance it was revealed that the accused has been suicidal since his arrest and made his second suicidal attempt on Monday morning by allegedly overdosing on pills.

Hlabangwane’s lawyer disclosed that the accused’s mental stability has to be reviewed.

Flávio Hlabangwane was caught battling to release tears from his eyes. The accused was breathing heavily and is said to have attempted to end his life.

He told the court that he would be submitting an application for Hlabangwane on his next appearance to undergo mental evaluation.

NPA’s Phindi Mjonondwane said, “The matter was previously sat down for the accused to acquire legal representation with Legal Aid South Africa, but we were informed in court that the accused failed the means test and therefore cannot be represented by Legal Aid. Which then meant that a private attorney had to come on board and that has been achieved.”

The matter was remanded to November 30, and the accused will be detained at the hospital section of the Johannesburg Correctional Services so that the he can be easily and closely monitored.
