Ward 25 up in arms of rape of Pimville Gogo

Pimiville Ward 25 residents are still reeling following the arrest of a man charged with the rape of a 67-year-old woman in the area.

Residents of Pimville Ward 25 and members of the EFF came out in numbers to take a firm stance against Gender-Based-Violence in the area. This was after a man was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a 67-year old woman in the ward.

EFF’s Bobby Lesolang said “Today we are here, fully in support of our Gogo who stays in this house. We’ve been here the whole week to offer support. We have taken gogo to social workers to get help. We also found that besides the assault, she does not have an Identity document so she has not been earning a pension. We are helping with all that, as well as transporting her to counselling sessions. We want the neighbours to step out and know that we condemn Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the strongest form,” he said.

Khutso Kekana who serves in Soweto’s EFF Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Desk said, “It’s important for victims to have support. We want uGogo to know that we believe her, she is not alone. We must also follow the case with a close eye and follow through. To ward 25 we calling for all residents to step up. What happened here cannot go unanswered. You have to understand that it could happen to anyone, tomorrow it could be your child, it could be you, GBV doesn’t choose. That’s why communities have to stand together. You should always offer a helping hand” Kekana said.

Nokuthula Khonkhobe, a resident of the area has called on the community to make their voices heard. “We need the people of ward 25 now to show more support, to speak out in cases of injustice.

“We are calling out on all residents here, more especially the women, to not look through the windows, come out and join us. The time for silence is over,” Khonkobe said. Kliptown SAPS’s Captain Hitler Ngwenya confirmed that a case was opened at the Kliptown Police Station was transferred to the Sexual Assault Unit after the suspect’s arrest.
