Over 200 Kliptown families receive basic essentials donations

"When I met up with the 1955 team and met some of the families I saw how difficult the situation is, it was sad and we were touched" - Lungile Gunundu.

Over 200 Kliptown families received essential items such as tissues, soap face masks and clothing.

The handover was a joint initiative by a non-profit organisation called 1955 Creative Collaborations and a public relations (PR) agency called A Girl and Guy. The two teams got together and decided to gather donations from willing sponsors using the BackABuddy system to be donated to the residents of Kliptown.

Tsekiso Nkwanyana, one of the founding members of 1955, revealed that his team had all been serving the community since the start of Lockdown last year.

“We normally donate tissues to the elderly every week and the disabled. Since they use the bucket system. We spray them after they have been drained. We’ve been doing this since lockdown started last year just to help,” he said.

Nkwanyana added that he appreciated the support from A Girl and Guy.

“For them (A Girl And Guy) to reach out to us and suggest this was very special. We were looking for ways in which we could help better nut we didn’t have the support of the financial means. So when A and Guy came through we were very happy,” he added.

The founder and Managing Director of A Girl and Guy, Lungile Gunundu said the work by 1955 and the living conditions of Kliptown residents is what led to her team deciding to help out.

“Founding out that over 70% of the population here is unemployed really touched my heart. When I met up with the 1955 team and met some of the families I saw how difficult the situation is, it was sad and we were touched. I think that was the primary reason we felt doing this was important,” Gunundu explained.

She also called on community members to get more involved in helping’s Kliptown underprivileged.

“What I’d like to see going forward is people helping one another a bit more. We really need to open our eyes and see that our neighbour is struggling then help where we can. I would say that is the mission behind this initiative, to inspire everyone to come through and lend a hand.”
