Schools urged to register for Kay Motsepe Cup

More than 2 400 schools are expected to take part in the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup.

Registration for the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup is open and teams are urged to register on time.

Deadline for registration is March 17 and no team will be registered after that date.

Only 2 400 schools took part in this event last year and the South African Schools Football Association is expecting more teams this year.

This competition is organised by financial services company, Sanlam, Motsepe Foundation and Ubuntu-Botho.

Overall champions of this youth soccer extravaganza will be awarded a trophy, gold medals and a R1 million cheque.

Runners up will receive R600 000 while third place will be given R500 000 as well.

One of the key objectives of this sponsorship according sponsorship manager, Frank Louw is to get as many football players as possible between the ages of 15 and 19 to compete and possibly to be seen by talent scouts.

The tournament was initiated by Mamelodi Sundowns boss, Patrice Motsepe through the Motsepe Foundation in memory of his mother.

Schools will play at cluster level with the winners proceeding to the Regional Finals, then Provincial Finals where the top two teams will be decided in each province.

These teams will then compete in the National Finals where the 1 million prize will be at stake.
