‘Let the youth lead’ – Nhlanhla Lux

Soweto Parliament and Nhlanhla Lux have criticised the government's slow reaction to looting and the 'hogging of positions of power'

When Soweto was rocked by looting sprees earlier last month. A team known as Soweto Parliament took a stand to defend Maponya Mall, which at the time was the only major shopping centre in Soweto that had not been looted. Soon after, residents and law enforcement also joined in on the defence.

“The mall is here because young people came together and expressed leadership, but we have councillors that are 80 years old in Soweto. We hope our actions will serve as a lesson for years to come. I hope when kids don’t know what to do in future because communities lack structure, they can look back at this and see that ordinary citizens stood together,” he said.

Lux also touched on rumours that Soweto Parliament is politically affiliated.

“A clear message to anyone who wants to reduce our actions into factions is that a re na taba, in other words: ‘we do not care’ where the fight is coming from, we will stand up as the men of Soweto. If that fight that you guys are fighting starts to influence our environment here in Soweto, we will not sit back and be spectators while our economy is debilitating and burning down overnight,” he added

Other Soweto Parliament who addressed media on the day were Sticks Malebo, who thanked the team for their efforts, and Mafahleng Selepe who urged residents to help police in recovering the looted items.
