Mandela Day joy for 97 Soweto families

The handovers started in Pimville on Saturday, with a handing over food and blankets to several families before stretching out to do the same in other townships such as Meadowlands and Orlando.

97 senior citizens around Soweto were treated to Mandela Day donations in the form of food and blankets on Sunday. The donation drive was organised by the Kasi Hero Foundation as part of the 67 minutes for Mandela initiative.

The foundation was founded amid hard lockdown last year and aimed to help alleviate poverty in communities hard hit by the covid-19 pandemic. The handovers started in Pimville on Saturday, with a handing over food and blankets to several families before stretching out to do the same in other townships such as Meadowlands and Orlando.

One of the beneficiaries of the Mandela Day giveaway was Pimville resident Eric Sgemela.

“We are very thankful. Today we feel like people amongst other people, with a sense of dignity. From the situation we were in, this showed that we have a great generation of young people. We pray that they (Kasi Hero) find more strength and more resources to continue the work that they have done,” the 66-year-old said.

The Kasi Hero Foundation’s work is not exclusive to Mandela Day, the team runs a weekly soup kitchen in Pimville, feeding around 200 kids per session. For this Mandela Day initiative, support came from various sponsors such as Boxer Superstore and Omega of Fire Ministries. One of the founding members of the Kasi Hero Foundation is Ndivhuwo Liphadzi.

“It’s incredible. When we started this we had no idea we would be able to reach and help this many people at this point. We started campaigning for blankets alone, but suddenly we were getting donations for food parcels as well. From the donations we were able to buy 97 food parcels, so we are proud. As a team we want to say thank you to all the sponsors who supported this,” he said.

With the demand to reach even more people, and others seeking out the Kasi Hero Foundation for help, the team added new members to its roster. Thulisile Zulu was among them.

“I always wanted to be part of something like this,” recalled Zulu.

“So when they started, I wanted to be involved and help out the community. We are proud of the work we have done so far and look forward to doing even bigger things.”
