Giving unconditional love to those alienated by society

Mama Gabi is a beacon of hope to ex-offenders.

Gabisile Nkumane affectionately known as ‘Mama Gabi’ to ex-offenders has become a pillar of hope and support.

Her love and compassion for ex-offenders has led her to start an organisation called Ex-Offenders Community Development.

The organisation’s aim is to empower ex-offenders and help tem adjust to living outside prison while giving back to the community.

She says the formation of the organisation was not planned.

“It just happened, in my whole like I did not think I would be doing this.

“I have a spaza shop and I would hear them tell their stories about how hard life is now that they are out of jail.

“They would complain about not having food or not having a place to stay.

“Some would even say it is better to go back inside.”

Mama Gabi says hearing their sad stories broke her heart that she felt like doing something for them

“I would give them the little I had and encourage them to pray and not loose hope in God.

“I wish I could do more for them because I would hate to see them go back to their old ways just for survival,” she says.

Other residents have joined the organisation and believe in helping ex-offenders turn their lives around and inspire young people to make good choices that will build and not destroy them.

Mama Gabi’s spaza shop has been closed for some time now because she gave all she could to the ex-offenders when they needed her help.

To assist the organisation in any way, she may be contacted on 071 962 5399.
