Act Now calls on Sowetan youth to step up

On Saturday, Act Now embarked on a 5 kilometre (5KM) walk from Moriss Isaacson High school in Jabavu to the Hector Peterson Memorial in Orlando West in partnership with Maponya Motors.

Anti-Gender Based Violence (GBV) group Act Now has launched the Youth Month GBV and Social Ills Outreach Programme. The initiative aims to educate communities and bring about positive social change across the country. On Saturday, Act Now embarked on a 5 kilometre (5KM) walk from Moriss Isaacson High school in Jabavu to the Hector Peterson Memorial in Orlando West in partnership with Maponya Motors. The team’s Chairperson, Tebogo Lerole said this was to honor the youth of 1976. “It’s youth month and we wanted to commemorate the brave youth of 1976. We walked the same path that learners walked on June 16 in 1976. We wanted to walk in the footsteps of young people that bled and fought for freedom and to inspire our current generation to step up” he said.

The walk was joined by Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu as well as various media personalities including Penny Lebyane and TT Mbha and Nompumelelo Mncube amongst others. On Sunday morning the team went on a 35KM cycling trail from Wilberforce Community College in Evaton to Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown in remembrance of the late struggle icon, Charlotte Mannya Maxeke.

“Mam’ Maxeke started a school called Wilberforce College and that’s where our starting point was. This is following the journey that Mam’ Maxeke walked,” he said.

Palesa Mashego, a member of the team said she was grateful to be a part of this initiative.

“I only joined the team late last year and it has been eye opening and very educational. It had been a while since I cycled but I’m glad that I could join the team, and we were able to complete a total of 35km cycling from Evaton to Kliptown,” Mashego said.

On Saturday Act Now is set to host a Food Drive event at the Diepkloof Welfare Centre in Diepkloof before an aerobics Boot Camp at Maponya Mall in Klipspruit on Sunday. Act now was launched just a year ago as a group of men against Gender-Based Violence. The team, however, is not exclusive to men and has welcomed anyone who wants to be part of the initiative.
