Groceries worth R80 000 donated to Ikageng in Orlando

Around 1853 children from 450 households visit the centre daily to have a meal or receive food parcels.

Through its Goals for Charity Funds Disbursement project, telecommunications powerhouse MTN teamed up with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and MTN8 Champions, Orlando Pirates to hand over groceries worth R80 000 to Ikageng Itireleng AIDS Ministry in Soweto.

MTN dedicated itself to donating R10 000 for each goal scored during the MTN 8 competition. Due to the impact of covid 19, MTN decided to raise the money donated per goal from R10 000 to R20 000. During the 2020 edition of the MTN8 football competition, 21 goals were scored in regulation time and R420 000 was raised. As part of its #REMAKE2020, MTN added R80 000 to raise the overall donation to R500 000.

Speaking to Soweto Urban at the event, MTN SA’s Acting Senior Sponsorship Manager, Thabo Phiri said it was important to give back to communities.
“Being able to contribute back to the community is an important part of what we get to do. Today we can show that it’s not only about business and that we truly care about communities, so we’re extremely grateful to be a part of this,” Phiri said.

The Orlando West-based Ikangeng centre is dedicated to serving children who underprivileged or has been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Around 1853 children from 450 households visit the centre daily to have a meal or receive food parcels. Carol Dyantyi, the centre’s manager, said the donation would go a long way in feeding families.

“Most of our children are from youth-headed homes, so a lot of them will benefit greatly from this. Covid hit everyone hard, you can imagine how much they have struggled. Words are not enough to explain our gratitude. Thank you to MTN, PSL, and Orlando Pirates,” she said.

The centre was picked by MTN8 Champions, Orlando Pirates as a deserving beneficiary of the donation, Buccaneers’ striker, Zakhele Lepasa, who grew up in Soweto, spoke to Soweto Urban at the handover.
“Having grown up here, we know some of the challenges that kids are facing, so it’s great to be able to be part of the solution and help out. For players it’s also big motivation to know that the goals we score in the competition will increase the amount that can be donated to communities,” Lepasa said.

The R500 000 was shared among MTN’s six regions and will benefit seven charities.
