Jostina Sangweni accused killers continue with bail application

The state versus the accused -new facts emerge.

Taelo Dipholo and Colleen Sello who are accused of killing a 58- year-old, mentally ill woman Mama Jostina Sangweni briefly appeared at Protea Magistrate Court on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, for their formal bail application.

When the two accused came into the court, the attorney for accused one (Taelo Dipholo) pleaded with the magistrate to be excused so she could complete a conversation she was having with her client before they were called in.

This is due to inmates being denied access to their attorneys due to the current Covid pandemic the country is facing.

Both accused are represented by different attorneys and the state presented the court with new facts on why they should be denied bail.

The state mentioned that there’s a video implicating the first accused, Taelo Dipholo in the murder of Sangweni.

In the video, Dipholo is seen at the garage buying petrol. When he left the garage he met a witness who stated that Dipholo informed her about a witch that needed to be burned when she asked him what the petrol was for.

The witness also stated that Dipholo is the one who poured petrol on the deceased.

The state went further to say that there is a witness who has given a statement implicating the second accused, Sello who is the one who allegedly lit the deceased. The witness mentioned Sello by his nickname ‘Mascones’.

Both attorneys argued that their clients do deserve bail since they are not a flight risk and can not impose any harm to the community and are willing to relocate for their safety.

However, the state read a note that was signed by Jabulani Moagi, representative of the Sangweni family.

The note stated that both the accused should be denied bail for they are safe in custody than having them out on bail and roaming on the streets.

It further said the case has drawn too much attention from the community and the media, and therefore bail should not be granted as the family also fears for their lives.

The accused were taken to Moroka SAPS to spend the night there so it could be easy for them to make their appearance again on Thursday.

The case was adjourned for Thursday where a judgment on the bail application will be heard.
