It was 2016 when then matric learner, Netsianda Thabeloni first had the idea to write his book – a study guide.

Four years later he would finally hold the first copy in his hands. The study guide focuses on accounting lessons and tips for Grade 12 learners, It was published by the African Institute for Training and Consultation and complies with the CAPS curriculum.

“It started in 2018 when my accounting teacher suggested that I write a book. It was only a far-fetched idea back then but then I started to pursue it. In 2018 I officially started writing the study guide. I wanted to explain accounting in a way learners would understand,” he said.

The 24-year-old admitted that although he enjoyed writing the study guide, he did face challenges he did not expect.

“There were many challenges that I did not anticipate. There were people that I reached out to for help and didn’t get it. Other times people didn’t take me seriously. I remember one time where I told a teacher that I would be writing a book and asked for assistance. He laughed and said ‘be serious’. I was confused because I was serious. It’s those kinds of challenges that may discourage you,” said Thabeloni.

He eventually was able to collaborate with various teachers in writing the study guide. On lessons he learned while working on it, Thabeloni said the biggest lesson was teamwork.
“I realised that you really can’t do it on your own. There were chapters in accounting that I also struggled to understand – I had to get help from many teachers. So that’s my advice to people: always try and get help, get information from other people,” he said

The study guide, titled Princia of Accounting has received positive feedback from learners as far as KZN and Mpumalanga. Learners frequently get in touch with Thabeloni via social media to ask for assistance. On his hopes for the future, he said he would one day like to be part of the Mindset Learn (learning channel) teachers’ team.
