Vuka Uzenzele Pimville Oldies celebrates 10 years in style

In addition to the centre's 5 members, Pimville Oldies also receives support from volunteers and students from the University of Johannesburg.

The Vuka Uzenzele Pimville Oldies (VUPO) NGO celebrated its 10th birthday anniversary by giving elderly citizens smart trolley bags on Wednesday.

Launched in 2010 and with support from the department of social development, Vuka Uzenzele Pimville Oldies provide meals, aerobics, and handwork for around 70 elderly citizens in the area.
The trolley bags are smart, lightweight, and portable for easy use. Centre Manager, Kidi Mofube said it was important to make them feel appreciated.

“Today we bought them the bags because wanted to show them that we appreciate the theme. At some point, we were giving out food parcels and our members did not have bags to carry the parcels with and that’s how the idea of these portable trolley bags came up,” said Mofube.

82-year-old Dorothy Nkosi, a member of the Vuka Uzenzele, said she had benefitted greatly from the center.

“We love your new bags. If you are a senior citizen and are sitting at home then you are missing out,” she said.

“The love, companionship I have found here is what has kept me here for this long. I would encourage everyone around our age to come and join. We have seen gogos here regaining their fitness, living healthier lives because of the aerobics and nutritious food we get here, so it’s a great place to be,” she said.

In addition to the center’s 5 members, Pimville Oldies also receives support from volunteers and students from the University of Johannesburg. Mofube extended gratitude to everyone who helps the center.

“We want to thank the community of Pimville for the love we have received so far, we also want to urge the senior citizens of our community to never think that their lives are over. They can come here and get active with us and improve their quality of life,” Mofube said.
