Police are warning residents about ATM scams in Diepkloof Zone 6

The warning comes after a number of reports in Diepkloof Zone 6.

Diepkloof police are warning the community and urging everyone to be vigilant when using the ATMs in the area, especially around the vicinity of sector 4 in Zone 6 Diepkloof. This follows reports that there are scams, where perpetrators pretend to be assisting people when using an ATM then rob them.

“What happens is, victims will insert the cards and then will be requested to punch in the bank pin like they normally do when withdrawing money, except this time the money will not come out, but will still receive bank notification on their cellphone which confirms them of the successful withdrawal,” said Diepkloof police spokesperson captain Phephi Matlou.

“We urge people to not allow anyone to offer them help when withdrawing from the ATMs as these criminals are on a mission and have already scammed several victims in the area. If a person needs help when withdrawing money they must ask for help from the security officers. The community must report any criminal activities to 086001011 or 011933-7400,” Matlou added.

Here’s how you can avoid falling victim:

-Don’t accept help from strangers
If the ATM is close to your bank’s branch, go into the branch and ask for help there.

-Stand close to the ATM
When using the ATM to withdraw or deposit cash, make sure that you stand as close as possible to the terminal and shield the keypad from view so that strangers cannot see your PIN. If it looks as if the ATM has been tampered with, rather go somewhere else.

-Cancel your card if you are a victim of ATM fraud.
If your card is stolen, get in touch with your bank immediately to cancel the card before fraudsters can access your funds.
