As the country continues the battle against the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Gauteng Department of Health has received an R25 million injection in the form of medical supplies. As the country continues the battle against the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Gauteng Department of Health has received an R25 million injection in the form of medical supplies. The donation was made by South African Breweries (SAB) to help the department to prevent a resurgence of the virus.

An official handover was made on Friday, in Johannesburg and was officially received by the Gauteng MEC for Health, Nomathemba Mokgethi.

“We are happy to see the commitment of the private sector in the fight against COVID-19, SAB as part of a worldwide corporation, has supported the COVID-19 response in the province. The equipment donated today will go a long way in assisting workers in our facilities,” Mokgethi said.

The donation was not the first time SAB threw its weight behind the Department of Health. In 2020, as the demand for alcohol-based sanitisers peaked, SAB addressed the shortage by adjusting its operations and produced an 80% alcohol-based sanitiser to help keep South Africans out of hospitals.

Speaking for SAB, Regional Corporate Affairs Director, Kgosi Mgotsi said SAB was committed to supporting the government in the fight against Covid – 19.
“Our government is putting in every effort to protect the nation against COVID-19, and as SAB we have a long-standing partnership with the province which began from the onset of the pandemic,” he said.

“As a nation, we are responsible and stronger together, we jumped at the opportunity to assist the Gauteng Department of Health when we heard their call on the shortage of medical equipment across the country. As the virus continues to put pressure on our healthcare system, we believe we must play our part as a South African-born business.”

SAB has previously donated equipment to hospitals around the Gauteng province, and Mgotsi said the company intends to continue this support throughout the pandemic.
“We have for the last 125 years formed a part of the fabric of South Africa and have stood behind this nation through all triumphs and challenges. In this time of uncertainty, we will again prove our commitment to our country and right now the healthcare sector needs our support,” he concluded.
