The Township Marathon that is run in and around Eldorado Park is not only a scenic and historic route but is also a marathon that gives proceeds to relief organisation Gift of the Givers, according to Gerhard Van Wyk, chairman of the marathon. –
Held yearly, this will be the 19th marathon that gathers thousands. –
Runners will have an option of four races – 42km, 21km, 10km and a four km fun run.-
“We encourage families to take part in the biggest sporting event in Eldos, it is almost like a family day,” Van Wyk said.-
The 42km marathon will start at the Extension nine stadium and runners will go through Eldos, Kliptown, Klipspruit, Lenasia, Eikenhof and Bushkoppies.-
With the success of the marathons, 3000 children are fed at the stadium since.-
Organisers are looking at helping old age homes in the future.-
“The marathon is in aid of hunger alleviation but we are also looking at assisting old age homes in the future,” Van Wyk said.-
He said that youth should take part in road running, it teaches discipline and is good for your health.-
“Our youngsters don’t partake in sport.-
“Once they are involved in sport, they will be kept busy and away from drugs and alcohol,” Van Wyk said.-
Those who aren’t keen on running can assist at watering points or with marshalling. –
The Township Marathon started with 150 people 19 years ago but has grown to almost 3000 runners last year, according to Van Wyk.-
“We are expecting 4000 runners this year,” said Van Wyk.-
