Criminals pretend to be some kind of service providers in order to access your home

Never grant strangers access to your home.

Criminals are always looking for innovative ways to gain access to people’s homes and properties even around Protea Glen. Their easiest method is tricking people into thinking that they are someone else. Just recently, in the area, one man was arrested for impersonating a police officer.

The head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity ADT, Charnel Hattingh said, “All the more reasons why people should allow random people access in their homes. Suburbs and communities across the country have seen their versions of these imposters who often seem to involve people pretending to be some kind of service providers.”

Hattingh explained that these scams vary from a person pretending to be chopping a neighbour’s tree to a phony municipal water meter reader.

Most of these imposters are said to be using the fact that some people are working from home currently because of the pandemic.

Hattingh said, “The key is to always verify the identity of anyone trying to gain access to your home. If you have any doubts. Don’t even grant them any access.”

She further stated that people should know that when it comes to Fidelity ADT Technicians, they always work on an appointment basis. ” This means that no one from our team will appear at anyone’s home unannounced, asking to inspect your home security system. Our technicians and our armed response officers also always carry very visible identification.” Concluded Hattingh.

People are also advised to always keep their local police station contacts handy along with their neighbourhood CPFs for such imposters incidents.
